Begin near Washington Square Park with a lovely view of Coit Tower, a monument to one of SF’s most celebrated eccentrics, Lillie Hitchcock Coit. From there, explore the story of the neighborhood’s Italian immigrants who flooded the area at the turn of the century and still lend the area much of its character. It was the friendly cafes and bars opened by the Italians that hosted the Beat Generation and the artists they inspired so your next stops are their old haunts like Caffe Trieste and Vesuvio, where everyone from Allen Ginsberg to Bob Dylan have enjoyed a drink. Pause in Kerouac Alley and press your noses to the glass of City Lights Bookstore. Finish with a few of the favorite hangout spots of Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas, proving that the spirit of art and eccentricity are alive and well in the neighborhood.

We’ll greet the sea lions (from a vantage point without any of the usual crowds), see traditional fishing boats much like the ones that were originally used by Italian immigrants to explore the Bay looking for crabs and peek into the restaurants where one of SF’s iconic seafood dishes was invented. Follow us into the heart of the largest Chinese community in the Western World as we delve into the history of the neighborhood and visit some of its most famous landmarks. Get practical tips for visiting on your own, like how to find the most interesting shops and where to eat delectable dim sum. It’s easy to walk through Chinatown by yourself, but this is an experience for people who want to learn about the history and culture of the neighborhood and pick up a few local recommendations.

Pass By: Chinatown, Grant Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94108

You could spend days wandering the lantern-covered streets of Chinatown, but we’ve designed this introduction to immerse you in its unique history and culture and give you a few reasons to come back again later. We start near the Dragon’s Gate, to discuss the history of this once-rough area, and address the mystery of SF’s moving waterline. Stopping at historical points of interest, we’ll introduce you to the often-overlooked history of Asian immigration to the US - it goes back much farther than you may think - and explain the ways that Chinatown has been integral to the growth of San Francisco as a whole. But this tour is only partially about history; we also want to immerse you in the modern life of the neighborhood that is a fascinating mix of East and West. We’ll stop off at landmarks like Waverly Place, Portsmouth Square, and St. Mary’s Cathedral. We’ll discuss Chinese medicine at a traditional apothecary, tempt your tastebuds at some of the city’s best bakeries, and even taste some fresh fortune cookies (an SF invention) at the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory. Before you go, we’ll recommend some of our favorite places to eat dim sum so you can come back later to eat in one of the foodie capitals of the city.
